What is Quarterback Passer Rating?

Quarterback passer rating is the means by which professional and amateur American/Canadian rules football leagues measure a quarterback's passing efficiency. The NFL, Arena Football Leage, and NCAA use different quarterback rating formulas in order to achieve this goal. It should be stated that passer rating is a reflection of how efficiently a quarterback passes the football, not how effectively he/she performs at the quarterback position overall. How well a quarterback performs depends also upon intangibles such as experience, pocket awareness, play calling ability, elusiveness, etc. None of which are factored into quarterback passer rating, of course.
