The often misunderstood quarterback rating is not nearly as complicated as
many may believe. For example, the quarterback rating system used by the NFL
can be calculated by doing the following:
A) Divide the number of completed passes by the number of pass attempts.
Subtract 0.3 from that number and then divide by 0.2.
((Comp/Att) -0.3) / 0.2
B) Divide total passing yards by the number of pass attempts. Subtract 3
from that number and then divide by 4.
((Yards/Att) - 3) / 4
C) Divide the number of touchdown passes thrown by the number of pass attempts.
Then divide that number by .05.
(TDs/Att) / .05
D) Take the number .095 subtract from that number interceptions thrown divided
by pass attempts. Divide the result by .04
(.095 - (Int/Att)) / .04
Note: make sure that the result of step A, B, C, or D is not greater than 2.375
and not less than zero.
E) Finally, add the results of steps A, B, C, and D, then divide that number by .06
Quarterback Rating = (A + B + C + D) / .06
You can also use a free quarterback rating calculator to
calculate the rating for you.
Note: The CFL or Canadian Football League uses the NFL quarterback rating system.
Other quarterback rating formulas
Arena Football League (AFL) Quarterback Rating Formula:
a = ((Comp/Att) - 0.3) / 0.2
b = (TDs/Att) / (2/0.3)
c = (.095 - (Int/Att) / .04
d = ((Yards/Att) - 3) / 4
a, b, c and d can not be greater than 2.375 or less than zero.
Quarterback Rating = (a + b + c + d) / .06
National Collegiate Athletic League (NCAA) Quarterback Rating Formula:
a = (Comp/Att) * 100
b = (TDs/Att) * 100
c = (Int/Att) * 100
d = Yards/Att
Quarterback Rating = a+(3.3*b)-(2*c)+(8.4*d)
Note: High school football leagues often use the NCAA quarterback rating system.
